Description

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 p. To the Austrian botanist Günther Beck von Mannagetta und Lerchenau, head of the Botanical Department of the Imperial and Royal Hofkabinett (now the Natural History Museum) in Vienna, thanking him for a copy of his "Monographie der Gattung Orobanche" (1890): "Heute habe ich Ihre werthvolle Monographie über Orobancheen erhalten. Ich spreche Ihnen meine innigsten und herzlichsten Dank für die freundliche Übersendung ihres geschätzten Werkes". - Originally trained as a physician, Gibelli decided to dedicate himself to botany in ca. 1860 and studied botany and microscopy. After holding chairs in Modena and Bologna, Gibelli was professor of botany and director of the famous botanical garden in Turin from 1883 to 1898. He is remembered for his pioneer studies of the symbiotic association between fungi and plant roots. - Very lightly duststained.
