Description

Postcard format. 1 p. To an actress and close friend, informing her that Suzanne, probably his wife Suzanne Desprès, will not go on tour. Lugné-Poe addresses the recipient as "la Dame de la mer", which suggests that she created Ellida Wangel in his 1892 production of Henrik Ibsen's "The Lady from the Sea" with the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre. - Often equated with the still existing venue of the same name in Paris, Lugné-Poe's Théâtre de l'Oeuvre started as an itinerant theatre company in 1892 that toured France and Europe until 1899. It was among the first companies to embrace the French Symbolist movement with many important premieres, including Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi" in 1896. Lugné-Poe and his company also helped to popularize in France the plays of Oscar Wilde, Gerhart Hauptmann, August Strindberg, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Ibsen. 1912 saw a brief revival of the company until the beginning of the war and finally, in 1919, Lugné-Poe reopenened the company at a permanent venue, the former Salle Berlioz on rue de Clichy. Suzanne Desprès (1873-1951) joined l'Oeuvre in 1894 and soon married Lugné-Poe. - On stationery of the Théatre de l'Oeuvre. With a minor tear and minimal foxing.
