Description

Oblong 8vo. 1 page. In German. Konrad Nies, who was born in Alzey and emigrated to the USA in 1883, addresses his card to his friends, the entrepreneurial Jewish couple Adolf Levi in Alzey, during a stay in the spa town of Reichenhall: "In the company of a woman whom I know you to hold in quite as high esteem as I do, and who will have the goodness to put her name under this card". Signed by Suttner, whom Nies certainly knew from her visit to the USA in 1904, where she had attended the World Peace Congress in Boston and met President Roosevelt and numerous American peace activists. Suttner, the former private secretary of Alfred Nobel, had become a symbolic figure of the international peace movement with the publication of her pacifist novel "Die Waffen nieder" ("Lay Down Your Arms!"). On 10 December 1905, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which she had initiated, in Kristiania on 18 April 1906. After the hardships of travelling, she recuperated at a spa in the Bavarian Alpine town of Reichenhall.
