Original, uniform printed wrappers. = The complete Crustacea section of this important expedition to Antarctica. It comprises of the Zoology volumes III, parts 2-5, 7-8, 10, and Volume VIII, parts 1-4. Page numbering is, therefore, only partly consecutive, whereas text figure and plate numberings for each part start anew. The Terra Nova expedition - named after the research vessel - took place between 1910-1913, and is mostly remembered for the tragic death of its leader, Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) who perished shortly after his discovery that not he, but Roald Amundsen was the first man to reach the South Pole. After the return of the ship the zoological collection were handed out to various experts. The crustaceans were dealt with by Borradaile, Calman, Barney, Tattersall, Gurney, Farran, and Barnard. Many new and rarely seen species were described and illustrated. Two new species were named after Scott. Uncut. Added: the preliminary leaves to Zoology volume VIII of the Expedition reports. This contained the last four crustacean papers, but while these bear much earlier precise dates, the preface is here dated 31st January 1935, suggesting that perhaps some parts were published later than indicated on the wrappers. Small former owner's stamp on one front wrapper. Slight wear to wrappers, near restricted to some abrasion of the spine ends of part VI, otherwise a very good, clean set. Not in Nissen.
