Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1902. 8vo (17.9 x 12.1 cm). 203 pp. Later green half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-bordered bands and title. Marbled endpapers. Top edge green. = An uncommon work. Published as University Library Bulletin (Extra Series). John Couch Adams (1819-1892) was a British mathematician and astronomer. His most famous achievement was predicting the existence and position of Neptune, using only mathematics. The calculations were made to explain discrepancies with Uranus's orbit and the laws of Kepler and Newton. Adams was Lowndean Professor in the University of Cambridge from 1859 until his death. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1866. A crater on the Moon is . named after him (Wikipedia). This copy in a very attractive, almost disproportionally beautiful binding, and except for a small smudge on the title page in a very good - near mint - condition.
