An elaborate discourse by Thomas Tuke (fl. 1600-1656), the minister at St. Giles-in-the-Fields, London, arguing against facial cosmetics for women "Amongst which unhappie creatures, there are many, who have so betarrd their faces with these mixtures and slubber-sauces with paintings laied one upon another, in such sort that a man might easily cut off a curd or cheese-cake from either of their cheekes.
