Description

Kiel, Leipzig, Lipsius & Tischer, 1911. Large 4to (32.2 x 26.2 cm). v, 406, 8 pp.; 28 tables, 77 text figures, one map in red and black. Contemporary grey buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The general, quantitative, results - and their interpretations - of this great German hydrobiological expedition to the Atlantic Ocean. The title translates as "Life in the Ocean after counting its inhabitants". The Plankton-Expedition was one of the major 19th-century zoological expeditions, on board the German steamer "National", to the Atlantic Ocean (1889). This concluding report was written by the expedition leader, Christian Andreas Victor Hensen (1835-1924). Hensen coined the term plankton and laid the foundation for biological oceanography (Wikipedia). Pictorial bookplate with decommission stamp in lower margin on the front pastedown; otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 4624.
