Description

Paris, Guérin, 1852-1854. Three papers bound in one. 8vo. 70 [36, 27, 7] pp.; eight [5, 1, 2] engraved plates of which four [2, 1, 1] hand-coloured. No wrappers. = A fine monograph and two supplementary papers with in total three new species of these handsome little rodents and the redescription of some others. Five plates show the living voles (one plate is not coloured because the animal is greyish white), and three plain plates show the systematically important skulls, and teeth. All the fine, realistic plates drawn by the author, the French ornithologist and mammalogist Jean-Joseph Zéphirin Gerbe (1810-1890). "He was the first to discover the pattern of wing taxis, the absence (diastataxis) or presence (eutaxis) of the fifth secondary in birds" (Wikipedia). Published in the Revue et Magasin de Zoologie, the last two papers back-to-back. A few light spots, mainly to some text page margins, the plates quite clean. Rare.
