Description

TWO VOLUME SET. RARE monograph in three parts on Viennese Jewry by Joseph Ritter von Wertheimer (1800-1887), an eminent Austrian Jewish philanthropist and author. Wertheimer's interest in the emancipation of his coreligionists led him to publish his two volume work in three parts 'Die Juden in Oesterreich vom Standpunkte der Geschichte, des Rechtes und des Staatsvortheiles', which at that time could not be issued in Austria, and as Austrian subjects were forbidden to print interdicted works elsewhere, the writer's name had to be concealed from the authorities, and thus does not appear on the title page. The first volume contains the first two parts, the second volume contains the third part. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 215x140mm. [XVI+253] + [VIII+408] pages. Dark violet cloth Hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Cover and spine rubbed and slightly stained. Cover corners and edges, and spine edges worn. Ex-library copy with ex-libris sticker (bequest of books from Avigdor Meir Mashal, the head gardener of Tel-Aviv) and stamp on front inner cover. Ink inscriptions on title-page, page V and last page. Pages yellowing, age-stained and wavy. [VOL.I]: Binding slightly loose and visible between front inner cover and whitepage. [VOL.II]: Binding slightly loose and visible between front inner cover and whitepage, and between pages 222-223. Pages 211-222 almost detached from binding. Last page (407/408) slightly ink-stained (text readable). Transparent stains on some page edges/corners. [SUMMARY]: These extremely rare two volumes on Viennese Jewry, indispensable to any serious student of Austrian Jewry, are overall in good condition.
