Original wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 27 p. Ex-library copy with two stamps on pages. A label on spine. Otherwise, a good copy. Pamphlet on the probable results of an increase in the purchasing power of gold in Europe and America, by George Joachim Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen, a Liberal, then a Liberal Unionist British statesman and businessman before joining the Conservative Party in 1893, reprinted from the Journal of the Institute of Bankers, volume IV, part VI, May 1883. He was best remembered for the Goschen formula (or Goschen proportions) was a ratio devised by him when Chancellor of the Exchequer, to allocate funding for services in Scotland and Ireland compared with England and Wales and used from 1888. In addition to his well-known work on "The Theory of Foreign Exchanges", he published several financial and political pamphlets and addresses on educational and social subjects, among them being, The Cultivation of the Imagination, Liverpool, 1877, and that on Intellectual Interest, Aberdeen, 1888. He was President of the Royal Statistical Society, 1886-88.
