Description

1 S. Visitkartenformat. Souvenir de Alessandro Bonci. - Der Tenor Alessandro Bonci galt als einziger ernstzunehmender Rivale Carusos, "although the difference in volume and style between the two singers marked them out for a divergent repertory: Caruso for the heavier and more dramatic roles, Bonci for those demanding above all lightness, agility and elegance. [.] Bonci first appeared in the USA in 1906, singing with great success in ‘I puritani’ at the opening of Hammerstein’s new Manhattan Opera House, but was lured to the Metropolitan a year later, remaining there until 1910. During the following years he toured widely, both in opera and concert [.] In the older pre-Verdi repertory, in 'Rigoletto', 'La traviata' and 'Un ballo in maschera', in 'Faust' and 'La bohème', he excelled by virtue of the sweetness of his tone and the finish of his phrasing" (New Grove III, 16).
