Two volumes, complete. First edition. A PRISTINE LARGE-PAPER SET ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER--PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR--OF THIS IMPORTANT AND EXTENSIVE JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNITED STATES. V, 420; III, 564 pp. The first volume features several chapters on New York, including an entire chapter on the Waldorf Astoria (17 floors, 1500 rooms, princely luxury, and the author's lunch with Alice Roosevelt!) Later on we learn about (American) football, as the author describes the Harvard-Yale game, right down to the cheers employed by each side. Then an extensive description of MIT and two entire chapters on Harvard. Later on we find Smith College and Tuskegee University Also Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and New Orleans. The author pays considerable attention to psychology and sociology as well. The second volume opens with a road trip through Texas and Arizona to California, with a chapter on Los Angeles and another on California beaches frequented by the wealthy. Thhen five chapters on San Francisco, including one on Chinatown (all written just before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.) Then five chapters on the Great Salt Lake and the Mormons (including a whole chapter on polygamy), an Indian school, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, and Niagara Falls, all interspersed with chapters about the American condition. Then Montreal and Quebec, just before the author's visit to Ellis Island and his return home to France. EACH VOLUME IS ONE OF ONLY 25 COPIES ON PAPIER IMPERIAL DU JAPON (volume 2 with a manuscript mention, initialed by the publisher Eugène Fasquelle, indicating that it was printed for the author.) 8vos.
