SECOND ENLARGED EDITION of Sacrati's third volume of letters, which was first printed in Bologna by Giovanni Rossi in 1586 under the supervision of Giulio Segni and Marcin Szyszkowski, two friends and correspondents of Sacrati. The book opens with the dedication to Giovanni Angelo Papio from the 1586 edition, followed by a new one to the same recipient (dated Ferrara, 1589), in which the author offers again to his patron the augmented volume.
A variant issue has “excudebat Victorius Baldinus, typographus ducalis” instead of “Apud Victorium Baldinum, typographum ducalem” on the title-page, and a blank leaf at the end without the colophon and the printer's device.
The first volume of Sacrati's letters in five books (Libri quinque) was first published in Ferrara by Vittorio Baldini in 1579. An edition in six books (Libri sex) was issued by Baldini in 1580 and 1582, and reprinted at Lyons in 1581 and at Cologne in 1583. Before the appearance of the third volume, a Volumen secundum was edited by Baldini in 1583.
The collection, divided into 6 books, contains 111 letters disposed in chronological order (not always observed). The letters are almost all dated between March 8, 1583 and July 1, 1589. Among them, 17 are addressed by various senders to Sacrati.
Among the recipients stand out the names of Marc Antoine Muret (5), Alfonso II d'Este (1), Guglielmo Sirleto (2), Luigi Groto (1), Francesco Benci (6), Ascanio Persio (2), Gabriele Paleotti (3), Pope Sixtus V (2), Camillo Borghesi (1), and Stephen Báthory, King of Poland (1).
