Berlin, R. Friedländer, 1893. 4to (33.1 x 27.2 cm). Title pages, xii, 758 pp.; 37 fine plates of which 30 in chromolithography or tinted (most plates double-sized, folded), and seven in collotype, most with printed overlays, and all with explanatory text leaves. Original printed wrappers. = Important monograph on the acorn worms or Enteropneusta in the Mediterranean Sea. The plates are morphological, anatomical, histological and cell-biological. Being related to the Echinodermata, there are less than one hundred species of acorn worm known worldwide. All live in deep, marine environments. The author, Johann Wilhelm Spengel (1852-1921) was a German zoologist and professor at the Justus-Liebig-Universität in Giessen. Uncut. Wrappers with minimal shelf wear, internally clean, unmarked. Very rare, especially in such a good state. Nissen ZBI, 3934.
