Description

Berlin, [Königliche technische Hochschule], 1884. Large 4to (30.8 x 22.4 cm). viic [sic! = xciii], 337 pp.; several text figures, ten plates including three fine, chromolithographed plates (one larger, folded), several original, mounted photos including one in full colour (an early example), and two large ones (20.1 x 15.8 cm; 13.9 x 19.9 cm [oblong]). Original printed wrappers. = This jubilee volume commemorates the opening of a new building of the Royal Technical School (now: Technical University) of Berlin. It contains a detailed paper on its history, the new building and its architecture, with a steel-engraved frontispiece of the building, a floor plan and two large, mounted photographs of the exterior; as well as 13 contributions on several subjects by members of its staff. This includes a paper on photography of coloured images, with three mounted photos, Über die Photographie farbiger Gegenstände in den richtigen Tonverhältnissen, by H. W. Vogel; a work titled Die Gewinnung der Baumaterialen für Steinstrassen, with illustrations of newly developed machinery; a work on building battleships, Einiges über die Konstruktion von Kreuzerschiffen, with a fine, large, folded plate; a work titled Araceenformen in der Flora des Ornaments, with two beautiful chromolithographs, and several other illustrated contributions. The building still exists, it was heavily damaged during WWII but entirely repaired. The university alumni and professor list includes seven Nobel Prize laureates. The numbering, in Roman numbers, of pp. 91-93 is peculiar. Wrappers soiled; a few leaves a bit spotted, and some marginal soiling, however, in all a very good, unmarked copy.
