Il catalogo documenta un’esposizione proposta dal Museo Cantonale d’Arte di Lugano che indaga il tema del volto e dello sguardo nell’arte dalla fine degli anni sessanta a oggi.
Osservando in che misura sia cambiata la corrispondenza fra l’immagine di un volto e il suo soggetto, e in che modo le recenti innovazioni tecnologiche abbiano mutato la sua raffigurazione, viene esplorata a tutto tondo la modalità di rappresentazione del volto, le sue alterazioni e trasformazioni e in particolare la sua progressiva spersonalizzazione.
Criterio per questa analisi è proprio lo sguardo, considerato l’elemento atto a rivelare il mistero di un viso e le sue diverse declinazioni.
Fra gli artisti presenti si ricordano Christian Boltanski, Gino De Dominicis, Richard Hamilton, Urs Lüthi, Marisa Merz, Bruce Nauman, Giuseppe Penone, Arnulf Rainer, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Schütte, Alex Katz, Bill Viola, Andy Warhol.

This catalogue explores the theme of the face and the gaze in art from the end of teh Sixties to the present. Observing the extent to which the correspondence between the representation of a face and its subject has changed, and how recent technological innovations have modified its representation, the exhibition present a thorough analysis of how the face can be represented, its alterations and transfromations and in particular ist progressive depersonalization. The principle means for this analysis is the gaze itself, which is seen as the act which reveals the mistery of a face and its declensions.
