Havin travelled together in Turkey (Asia Minor / Anatolia) for several years in succession, in recently visited the area of Silifke (Seleucia ad Calycadnos) on the MEditeranean coast north of Cyprus. With the exception of the great archaeological site of Uzuncaburç (Olba / Diocaesarea), the many fascinating ruins spread around there, some along the beautiful sea-shore, others on the slopes or rocky promontories of the Taurus mountains, are practically unknown. We were deeply impressed by these rich, often wel-preserved remains, dating from Hittite to mediaeval times, comprising castles, temples, theatres, cisterns, a wide variety of graves, reliefs, churches and chapels, monasteries, mosaics. Among the most striking witnesses of the past besides Olba / Diocaesarea with the oldest preserved Corinthian temple in Asia Minor, are the extensive Roman / Byzantine city of Kanlidivane (ancient Kanitelis), the ROman rock reliefs of Adam Kayalar, the manby ornate temple-like tombs and the splendid early_Christian onastery of Alahan, perched high up in the Taurus.
