Durante la sua giovinezza, egli era affascinato dal destino romanzesco del Re Svedese Carlo XII e nel 1717 ebbe l'occasione di incontrare a Parigi uno de suoi antichi consiglieri, il Barone di Gortz. Dieci anni più tardi, durante il suo esilio in Inghilterra, strinse amicizia con un amico del Re, il Barone Fabrice. In questo modo potè riunire le informazioni disponibili con le confidenze di cui venne a conoscenza, ed iniziare a scrivere tra il 1728 ed il 1729 la prima versione dell'opera che venne pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1731. Voltaire in his adolescence was fascinated by the novelistic destiny of the Sweden king Charles XII and in 1717 he could have the occasion to meet one of his ancient coucillor, the Baron of Gortz.<BR>Ten years later, when he was exilated in Great Britain he became a friend with a friend of the king, the Baron Fabrice. In this way he could collect more information and confidences so he wrote his first version of the work between 1728 et 1729, published for the first time in 1731. Spine is missing.
