About the Book:-The translator, having accomplished his very interesting, though laborious, task of rendering into English the manuscripts of General Ferrier, is anxious to avail himself of this opportunity to congratulate that officer on having added these instructive volumes to the Eastern literature of this country. They can be more thoroughly appreciated here than in France; and that they must prove of real value in England is evident when we consider how great are the interests involved in the development – commercial, social, and religious of that vast continent which Providence has permitted to fall under the rule. The author has spoken of the arduous services of the Anglo-Indian army in Afghanistan. The style of the author is rather severe, and there are several portions of the present work in which there was an opening for much touching writing and for appeals to the highest and best feelings of our nature. When there was a duplication of thought, or want of arrangement, he has endeavored to remedy these defects in the interest of this rare yet available work.
