Description

Stuttgart and Tübingen, J. C. Cotta, 1834. 8vo (21.1 x 12.4 cm). 784 pp. (xii, 320; [iv], 448). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title. Edges speckled red. = A complete copy of one of the major contributions to entomology by the German naturalist (chiefly botanist) Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858). He ".was a prolific German botanist, physician, zoologist, and natural philosopher. He was a contemporary of Goethe and was born within the lifetime of Linnaeus. He described approximately 7,000 plant species (almost as many as Linnaeus himself). His last official act as president of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina was to admit Charles Darwin as a member. He was the author of numerous monographs on botany and zoology" (Wikipedia). The wasp-family Ichneumonidae was his entomological speciality. Boards rubbed, joints partly split; weakly foxed throughout (as often), otherwise a very good copy. Horn-Schenkling, 15947.
