Description
Very rare miniature edition of the Psalms commissioned by Caterina de' Medici, Queen of France. The text is that of the 1571 Paris edition by Jean Charron, without the “Orationes ante communionem”, and is a revised version of Antonio Brucioli's Italian translation, which had been placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1559. The library of Caterina de' Medici was rich in Italian books and included a manuscript with Brucioli's translation of the Psalms (Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, ms. 8554) (cf. R. Gorris Camos, La donna della Bibbia, la Bibbia delle donne: stampare, comprare e leggere la Bibbia nel ‘500, in: “Le donne della Bibbia, la Bibbia delle donne: teatro, letteratura e vita. Atti del 15. Convegno internazionale, Verona 16-17 ottobre 2009”, R. Gorris Camos, ed., Fasano, 2012, pp. 14-15).
