Description

Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Turkish. 61 p. The first earliest translation into Ottoman Turkish of Cicero's 'De Senectute' was in 1559 by Murad Bey who was among sixteenth-century dragomans and the most prolific writer of independent works of poetry and prose. In his own testimony, Murad was captured at the Battle of Mohacs in 1526 when he was seventeen years old. Originally named Balazs Somlyai, he hailed from Nagybanya. During the next four centuries De Senectute was not translated as a printed book until 1951. It was published as the 28th book of the "Latin Classics" series made by the Ministry of Education with the Early Republican Enlightenmentin 1951. Ayse Sarigöllü is a translator and a Turkish professor on the Latin culture and the Roman history. She is the author of 'Roma edebiyatinda tarih' [i.e. History in the Roman literature]. First Turkish Edition. Only one copy in OCLC: 71410311 (Pamukkale University of Turkey).
