In 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Jonathan Brent travelled to Moscow and gained access to the Russian Center for the Preservation of Documents of Contemporary History, now the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History and originally the Institute of Marxism-Leninism. Over the next fifteen years he would return regularly to this official repository of Soviet documents, exploring the evolution of the communist state while observing the ever-changing face of post-communist life.
