8vo., Second Edition, contemporary signature on front free endpaper, later signature on half-title; original red buckram, gilt back, uncut, boards mildly age-stained, upper hinge starting (but binding wholly sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. With 32pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. Collects three extended tales first published in periodicals: Jael (English Illustrated Magazine), Jacquetta (English Illustrated Magazine) and Moth-Mullein (Cornhill Magazine). First collected in book form in 1890. In keeping with Baring-Gould's habitual topographical settings, the three stories are based respectively in Essex, Guernsey and the Thames Estuary. Extremely scarce. Not in Sadleir or Wolff; apparently not listed in BLPC. CBEL III, 1035 (recording the first edition).
