Description
Der Einband ist leicht berieben und die Seiten sind papierbedingt gebrt. Sonst aber ein gut erhaltenes Exemplar/ The binding is lightly rubbed and the pages are paper browned. Otherwise, however, a well-preserved copy. - The San'ani Jewish house with its venerable past deserves not to be forgotten. It is a favorite idea of the present writer that a house of this type should be erected in Jerusalem and serve as a living museum, where representative objects of the precious material civilization of the Yemenite Jews should be permanently exhibited and where Yemenite men and women should have their workshops for creative work on the lines of their traditional handicrafts of silver-work, weaving, leatherwork, bas-ketmaking etc. There is no technical difficulty in carrying out this idea. For the master builders, who erected the houses in the Jewish quarter of San'a in recent years, are now in Israel, where they are engaged in various branches of the local building industry. All that is needed to convert that dream into reality is the devotion of an enthusiast. May Professor Carl Rathjens' careful study of Jewish domestic architecture in San'a find such an enthusiastic response (Introduction). He made several visits to Yemen, in the years 1927, 1931, 1934 and 1938. He is considered the greatest scholar of Yemeni research in the 20th century. He contributed more than any other in conducting scientific and ethnographic research, resulting in a wide range of findings, and he has left over 2500 ethnographical items and some 4000 positive and negative photographs from South Arabia (Wikipedia).
