Description

Paris, Gabriel Dufour, 1808-1809. Two volumes in two. 8vo (20.2 x 12.5 cm). 768 pp. [384; 384]; 25 [12; 13] engraved plates. Original, uniform half vellum over marbled boards. Spines with script title in an old hand. = First of four botanical journals with this (short) title (the others starting in 1813, 1887, and 1993 respectively). Well-illustrated. Among the contributers we find such eminent botanists as Palisot de Beauvois, Bonpland, Loiseleur Deslongchamps, Dupetit-Thouars, Jaumes de Saint-Hilaire, Poiret, Persoon and Sonnini de Manoncourt. Several important monographs and descriptions and illustrations of new species are included. Plate numbering is irregular. For unknown reasons, just two volumes were published. In 1813, the journal had a restart as Journal de Botanique, appliquée a l'Agriculture, a la Pharmacie, a la Médecine et aux Arts. That series was ended after just four volumes in 1814. Provenance: the name Trembley written in an old hand on both titles. Light shelf wear to the boards; damp stain to the last text leaves and plates. Otherwise a very good set. Cat. BM(NH), p. 945.
