Description

Hilversum, De Jong & Co., 1975. Broadsheet (116.0 x 83.0 cm). Full colour offset print. = A fine, large poster (promoting buttermilk, and, symbolically, showing a buttercup) designed by the famous Dutch illustrator and author Hendrik Magdalenus "Dick" Bruna (1927-2017). "Bruna was best known for his children's books which he authored and illustrated, numbering over 200. His most notable creation was Miffy (Nijntje in the original Dutch), a small rabbit drawn with heavy graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colours. Bruna also created stories for characters such as Boris Bear, Poppy Pig, Snuffy, Lottie, Farmer John, Kitty Nelly, and Hettie Hedgehog. Aside from his prolific catalog of children's books, Bruna also illustrated and designed book covers, posters and promotional materials for his father's publishing company A. W. Bruna & Zoon." (Wikipedia). The well-known character Hello Kitty allegedly inspired by Dick Bruna's Miffy. "The Japanese creators of Hello Kitty are to ditch her friend Cathy after a legal battle with a rival company responsible for the character Miffy. Legal action was brought in November by Dutch firm Mercis over claims that Cathy looked too much like Dick Bruna's well-known creation. The court agreed, but Sanrio, behind the Kitty brand, lodged an appeal. This week the companies issued a joint statement announcing they had reached 'a worldwide settlement'. Sanrio promises to drop the character Cathy. Both will donate about £135,000 to the victims of the earthquake in Japan rather than spend money on legal fees. Miffy was created in 1955, while Cathy has been marketed since 1976. Hello Kitty sells 50,000 branded products in nearly 60 countries." (The Standard, 2012). This original poster is in excellent condition, the paper and colouring bright. Some very light marginal creasing, but otherwise fine.
