Very rare separately published editions of two articles, accompanying the first and second sheet of an equally rare hydrographic chart published in 1843 and 1846 by the Dutch cartographer and hydrographer Pieter baron Melvill van Carnbée (1816-1856). The chart was published in three sheets showing the waters between Sumatra and Borneo, the first two sheets, discussed here, cover the waters around the Riau Islands, the Lingga Islands and Singapore and the South China Sea. - The texts open with a brief introduction, a cartobibliography (printed and manuscript maps) and a general bibliography. The main texts note and comment on the coordinates of different places given by various sources, and include many of the small islands, cliffs and shoals in these waters. The first article ends with a table giving different spellings of geographical names in English/Dutch and Malay. - The articles were originally published in "Verhandelingen en berigten betrekkelijk het zeewezen en de zeevaartkunde". - With library stamps of the Royal Danish maritime library ("Marinens Bibliotek").
