Large 4to (300x212 mm). Etched frontispiece by Joseph Juster after Louis Dorigny, [12], 208 pp. and the full-page etched portrait of Nicola Santapaulina by Joseph Juster. With some woodcut diagrams in the text. Contemporary stiff vellum, lettering piece on spine, red edges. Some light occasional browning and staining, but a good, genuine copy.
First edition of this work on horses and horsemanship dedicated to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III. It comprises three books, the first two are by Nicola, the last one, by Luigi, is devoted to the use of horses in battle and their display during celebrations. Nicola was Grand Duke Cosimo III's senior cavalryman. His son Luigi was appointed as first cavalryman of the Accademia Delia in Padua, for which he created horseback choreographies. He wrote this book, as stated in the preface, to render honor and justice to his father.
