Description

Paris, Armand Colin, 1897-1918. Three Volumes and Tables in five. 8vo. 3,733 pp. [I (1897) xv, 835; II (1900) 878; III(1-2) (1902-1911) xii, 956; III(3-4) (1913-1918) xi, 957-1724; "Tables" (1918) 258 pp. 667 text figures [I: 116; II: 128; III(1): 94; 3(2): 124 (numbered 95-216); 3(3): 92 (numbered 217-308); III(4): 115 (numbered 309-423], 14 maps and plates, several larger, folded, or coloured [I: 5; II: 2; III(1): 3; III(2): 4; III(3): 3; III(4): 4]; and a tissue-guarded portrait of Eduard Suess as frontispiece to Part III(4). Original uniform brown cloth. Gilt title on the spines. = The first French edition of this well-illustrated classic on world geology and stratigraphy by the eminent Austrian geologist Eduard Suess (1831-1914), discoverer of Gondwanaland and the Tethys ocean, and founder of the idea of the biosphere. This wonderful monograph is not merely a translation as it is greatly enlarged and most plates and figures are new and especially drawn for this edition. Many text figures are carefully hand-coloured; some are page-sized, making a division in plates and text figures rather arbitrary. Part III(1-4) is here bound in two; it is sometimes also found bound in four. The number of figures stated on the title of the first volume (122) is incorrect. Remnants of labels on the spines; cancelled library stamps on title pages, and several other page margins, rear board of volume III(1-2) slightly damaged, some staining visible on lower fore edges, but not inside; nevertheless, in all a very good, complete set, which due to the amount of new information should be preferred over the original edition. Cat. BM(NH) Supplement, p. 1270. Not in Ward and Carozzi.
