Description

RARE translation of and a comprehensive introduction to 'The Book of Lamentations' by Salvatore Minocchi (1869-1943), an eminent biblical scholar and a pioneer of Catholic modernism. Minocchi was the editor of a periodical of historical-critical exegesis 'Studi religiosi' (1901-1908), and in 1908 he broke with the Roman Church, whose dogma he believed to be at odds with science. 'The Book of Lamentations' (Hebrew: Megilat Eikhah) is a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem from the Old Testament, where it appears in the Ketuvim ('Writings'), beside the Song of Songs, Book of Ruth, Ecclesiastes and the Book of Esther (the Megilloth or "Five Scrolls"); in the Christian Old Testament it follows the Book of Jeremiah, as the prophet Jeremiah is its traditional author. 145x95mm. XVI+125 pages. Softcover rebound with cardboard and blue cloth spine. Original cover in-bound. Cover corners and edges slightly bumped. Correction pen inscription and tape residues on spine bottom edge. Ex-libris sticker on front inner cover. Original front cover corners, rear cover bottom corner and edges chipped and worn. Stamp on pre-title page. Transparent tape on original cover and near binding. Pen inscription on original front cover upper edge. Stamp on pre-title page. Original front cover and pre-title page wrinkled. Some pages slightly dog-eared. Pages yellowing, age-stained and rough-cut as published. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare translation and introduction to one of the most beautiful poetic books of the Bible by an influential representative of Italian modernism is otherwise in good condition.
