Large 8vo (28.5 x 19.7 cm). 418 pp. [180; 238]; 16 portraits (medaillons), 21 other plates (of which 16 in full colour, including a frontispiece), four maps of which two double-sized, numerous text engravings of various sizes. Original printed wrappers and protective semi-transparent paper sleeve. = A well-illustrated history of one of the oldest and largests zoos and botanical gardens in the world. The medaillons show the most prominent naturalists and explorers of the previous 100 years. Many other naturalists are represented by text engravings with allegorical settings. the five plain plates show various places near or within the museum, zoo and gardens; the hand-coloured plates depict flowers and birds; the four maps show growth of the gardens over time.
