Paris, Ch. Béranger, 1900. Two volumes in two. 8vo (24.0 x 15.5 cm). 1252 pp. [xvi, 1-560; vii, 561-1229; 27 plates and maps (several coloured), including two large, folded maps in rear pocket. Uniform red cloth with gilt ornamental bands and title on the spines, and gilt title on the front boards. Bluyish endpapers. Speckled edges. = A detailed and well-illustrated work on coal production and consumption in the British Empire, when it was at its pinnacle. Obviously the French - then the only other serious world power - were very interested in these facts, but 120 years onwards they still give an excellent view, with solid data, of the economical importance of coal and coal products in an industrialized world. Small, old, weak stamp on half-titles and titles, otherwise an excellent, clean set.
