Description
Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\VEAE\003671; Quondam, p. 308.
FIRST EDITION of Giacomo Pergamini's letters, which appeared posthumously and were dedicated by the author's nephew Orazio Negri to Federico Ubaldo della Rovere, Prince of Urbino (Fossombrone, April 21, 1618).
The collection contains 345 letters, which are all undated except for a final section of 42 written by Pergamini on account of Scipione Gonzaga. They are dated from Rome between December 21, 1587 and January 9, 1592. Two other letters have a date, one to Bartolomeo Zucchi is dated Rome, September 12, 1597 and a letter by Giulio Mazzarini, the only one addressed to Pergamini, is dated Bologna, February 29, 1606.
As usual in late Renaissance letter collections, which were considered more as a model for letter-writing, than as documents of historical interest, a thematic index groups the letters into 13 topics: Raccomandatione (recommendation); Congratulatione (congratulation); Condoglienza e Consolatione (condolence and comfort); Complimenti misti (various compliments); Lamento (lamentation); Lode (praise); Piacevolezza (liking); Ragguagli e Negotii (commitments); Ringratiamento (thanks); Discorso (speech); Visita (visit); Scherzo (joke); Scusa (apology).
Among the recipients, many of which are dukes and bishops, stand out the names of Flaminio Nobili (1), Annibal Caro (2), Antonio Giganti (4), Bartolomeo Zucchi (8), Silvio Antoniano (3), Giovanni Francesco Peranda (4), Torquato Tasso (11), Francesco Panigarola (1), Diomede Borghesi (4), Lelio Torelli (1), and Giovanni Battista Guarini (2).
