Description

Wiesbaden, C. W. Kreidel, 1901. 4to. 175 pp., 16 maps of which 15 tinted. Publisher's half grained cloth over limp linen boards. Gilt title on the spine and front board. = The whole zoogeography-part of the "Materialen zur Naturgeschichte der Insel Celebes" (Sulawesi). The Sarasins both were interested in insular zoology, in particular malacology, ornithology and herpetology. Not surprising, the first chapter of 53 pages deals with Die geographische Verbreitung der Land- und Süsswasser-Mollusken von Celebes. Other chapters are devoted to the herpetology and ornithology of the island, and adjacent islands. The many zoogegraphical maps show the whole of southeast Asia, from Burma to Australia and including the Malayan peninsula, Indonesia and the Philippines. From a zoogeographical view point this region is the of the most complex and interesting on earth, and this work forms an important contribution to understanding the underlying geography and geology. From the library of G. Molengraaff , with a hand-written dedication by - probably - Paul Sarasin. Small chip to spine; library stamp on the title pages and inoffensive punch hole sin the margin of the first ten or so leaves. Otherwise a very good copy.
