The book presents a list of Megrelian (Mingrelian) first and family names (surnames and names) gathered in the early 1940s by the director of the Zugdidi useum of Local Lore in fulfillment of a contact signed in 1940 between the Acad. N. Marr Inst¿tute of Language, History and Material Culture and A. Tchanturia. The list numbers up to 10000 entries from practically all districts of Samegrelo (Megrelia). The author was commissioned to compile a definitive list of Megrelian family names before the World War II. Unfortunately, he did not have time to finish his work, thus some of the aspects, such as the origin of names, remained incomplete. The family names listed in the book were testified in places such as: Anaklia, Chkadua, Darcheni, Didi Nedzi, Kakhati, Kariata, Khobi, Lia, Narazeni, Nikosia, Obuji, Sachino, Tsaishi, Zugdidi and many others.
