Description

Madrid, La Dirección general del Instituto geográfico y Estadístico, 1886-1895. Five volumes in five. 4to (27.0 x 19.0 cm). 3168 pp. [xiii, 803; xi, 288,455;vii, 768; 444;379]; 33 mostly folded plates and maps [5; 15; 7; 2; 4]. Contemporary ruled half calf over shagreen boards. Spines with four blind-tooled, gilt-bordered raised bands, and green morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = A fine set of this great Spanish geographical, topografical and geodesical journal. The often large, folded plates show views, scientific instruments, etc, or are maps, e.g., a large geodetic map of Spain and several fine engraved plates such as on Mount Sabina Station in Algeria. In fact, all geodesic maps are quite large, multi-folded; several encompass the adjacent parts of the Mediterranean Sea, Alboran Sea, Strait of Gibraltar and Atlantic Ocean as well as parts of Portugal, Spain and North Africa. Plate numbering is, now and then, erratic. Old label on spines foot and a small library stamp on titles; light shelf wear (more so to volume VI, with the top front hinge starting), otherwise an excellent set. Rare, especially in this very good condition.
