In three volumes. 4to (two text volumes, 25.4 x 16.8 cm), and folio (atlas, 44.5 x 32.0 cm). 1,222 pp. [I(1879) xxviii, 622; II(1880) 572]; numerous (i.e. >150) text engravings (only partly numbered); four folded geological profiles (two in full colour), one lithographed plate, and one folded, tinted map, titled "carte d'assemblage"; Atlas with six very large, folded, tinted lithographed maps. Original uniform burgundy pebbled cloth with gilt title on the spines (text volumes); original light, bluish-grey printed wrappers (atlas). = Rare and important contribution on quaternary glaciology of the French Alps and more in particular the Rhone valley and its glaciers. The work was written by the French geologists and palaeontologists [Claude Alexandre] Albert Fasan (1833-1902) and Ernest Chartre (1843-1924). The many text engravings show landscapes, geological structures, fossils - from shells to elephants - etc., etc. The scale of the large (atlas) maps is 1:80.000. Also published in Annales de la Société d'Agriculture d'Histoire Naturelle de Lyon, but this is the offprint. Tiny blind stamp in the margin of the title pages, marginal dampstain to the lower inner corner of a few leaves in volume one, repair to the atlas wrapper lower margin, otherwise a very good, clean set.
