Description

Lediglich Schutzumschlag mit leichten Randlren und kleinem Einriss. Innen sauber und makellos. / Only dust jacket with light edgewear and small tear. Inside clean and immaculate. - This book is a companion volume to The Chief Rivals of Corneille and Racine. English readers who desire an adequate acquaintance with the greatest period of French drama should find its contents fully as interesting as that of its predecessor. Two of the plays included in it, Saint Genest and Ariane, are quite as noted, and by many critics are thought quite as good, as any in the other book. Three others, la Mort de Sque, Osman, and Esther, are of especial interest because of their relationship to Racines Britannicus, Ba-jazet, and Esther. Timocrate and Astrate are the two best and most famous romanesque tragedies; in the earlier volume there is no example of this type of play, which in its own times was immensely popular and constitutes no small proportion of the dramas of the period. More Plays by Rivals of Corneille and Racine contains, in all, English translations of eleven tragedies of the great age of French drama, and also one of the best plays of Alexandre Hardy, who immediately preceded that age and was the most prolific of all French dramatists, and one by La Grange-Chancel, the chief transitional figure between French tragedy of the seventeen century and that of the eighteenth century.
