Two of the plays included in it, Saint Genest and Ariane, are quite as noted, and by many critics are thought quite as good, as any in the other book. Three others, la Mort de S�que, Osman, and Esther, are of especial interest because of their relationship to Racine�s Britannicus, Ba-jazet, and Esther. Timocrate and Astrate are the two best and most famous romanesque tragedies; in the earlier volume there is no example of this type of play, which in its own times was immensely popular and constitutes no small proportion of the dramas of the period.
