Description

Melbourne, Government Printers, 1882. 4to (27.1 x 18.3 cm). 37, [ii] pp.; several text engravings, ten chromolithographed plates (of which two combined on a single, double-sized sheet). Original printed wrappers. = One of the most richly illustrated faunal descriptions of Australia; especially interesting because of the many thoroughly observed and carefully described mammals reptiles, fishes, molluscs, bryozoans, insects and other animals. Many of these Australian animals are pictured and described for the first time. In total 20 decades were published, each with a mix of species from various phyla. This is the complete seventh decade, with fine illustrations of, for instance, an Argonauta or paper-nautilus, marine fish including two sharks, a ray, and a sea-dragon, several bryozoans, and some large phasmas (Orthoptera) on the combined plates. Very rare. Spine perished. Vague stamps on front wrapper, and in one text page margin, discolouring on the inner margins due to rusty staples, one shark image with offsetting from the opposite text page, otherwise very good. Nissen ZBI, 2828.
