Description

's Gravenhage, Isaac Du Mee, 1779-1781. Two parts in one. 8vo (22.2 x 13.3 cm). Title pages with woodcut vignette, xvi, 160; [ii], 220 pp.; six engraved plates (I-II; III-VI) of which five in beautiful original hand-colouring. Contemporary polished half calf over speckled boards. Spine with gilt ornamental bands, gilt bordered labels. = Boddaert's rarest work, published in two parts, and seldom seen complete. The Dutch zoologist and medical doctor Pieter Boddaert (1730-1796) was author of many original observations in natural history and medicine. Here, however, he translated and commented upon observations by other, mostly German, naturalists recently published in Der Naturforscher, including papers by its editor, Johann Ernst Immanuel Walch (with three plates, two dealing with molluscs, the other with butterflies), Chemnitz, Meinike, Block (i.e., Bloch), and others. Other subjects included deal with, e.g., mammals, birds, and mineralogy (with two fine, hand-coloured plates of gems and fossils). In the two parts published, text numbering starts anew, but plate numbering is consecutive. Fore edge uncut. A few tears into the text; two text leaves (pp. 125-126 on a bird; and 153-154 on insects) torn with text loss; otherwise very good, clean, unmarked, the plates very good. Landwehr, 143 (under Natuurbeschouwer, with Boddaert listed as editor).
