Description

Folio (215 x 315 mm). Ottoman Turkish. 2 parts plus genealogy in one volume. (3), 24, 75, (1), 251, (1) pp. Contemporary half cloth binding. First printing of Mehmed Edirnevi's history of Islam and the Ottoman Empire. The first part covers the Islam from its emergence until the date of the book's composition but excluding the history of Ottomans; this is treated in the second part, from the foundation of the empire until the death of Sultan Ahmed I in 1617. Mehmed (d. 1640) composed two manuscript versions of the first part: in the initial version, he briefly narrates the emergence of Islam and the subsequent history of the caliphates, Abbasids, Umayyads, etc. While he later rewrote this section by expanding the subject matter and including new chapters, this printed edition is based on the earlier, shorter manuscript. - Browning, minor paper tears, pencil underlinings, paper pasted over previous ownership marks. Minor wear to binding. - Özege 15558. OCLC 16004690.
