Description
London, The Geological Society of London, 1829. 4to (28.7 x 22.7 cm). 16 pp.; one large, folded hand-coloured sheet with engraved views and profiles. Paper spine cover. No wrappers. = A detailed study of the local geography and geology of this western Scottish island, with many original observations, written by two giants of British geology, namely Adam Sedgwick (1785- 1873) who first described and named the Devonian and the Cambrian period, and Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871) who did the same for the Silurian period. Together they pushed the age of the earth back with several hundreds of million years. Published in the Society's Transactions volume II. A very light stain in the top margin of the leaves, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
