ABOUT THE BOOK: A scarce little travel guide, which despite the “overland” in its title, describes a route by sea from England to China, with stops at Gibraltar, Malta, Egypt, India, Ceylon, Hong Kong, and Singapore, before finally reaching Shanghai. Information about the places visited is generally descriptive, especially the natural scenery. Recommended attractions of each place are also mentioned with a few facts about them. However, it does not include detailed information for tourists on food and lodging, etc. The book states that among the fellow passengers are the military men, civilians and elderly men with their matronly partners. Their feelings are also elaborated aptly. At last, once the journey ends, the author gives genuine advice that is necessary for a pleasant trip. It includes carrying “Handbook of Information,” light luggage with destination label affixed to it, donning suitable clothing, carrying a pocket telescope and a good map of India, and taking only sovereigns.
