Original blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine. = First English translation of this important botanical handbook by the German botanist and co-founder of the cell-theory, Mathias Jacob Schleiden (1804-1881); erroneously listed as J. M. Schleiden on the title page. Armorial bookplate "Patior ut potiar" of William Spottiswoode mounted on front pastedown. William Spottiswoode (1825-1883) was an English mathematician, physicist and partner in the printing and publishing firm Eyre & Spottiswoode. He was President of the Royal Society from 1878 to 1883. 32 pp. publisher's catalogue bound in the rear. Neatly rebacked; slight bump to upper outer corner, otherwise an excellent copy.
