Graziosa ristampa del celebre romanzo del 'Doctor Johnson', oggetto della più famosa biografia della letteratura inglese, scritta da James Boswell, stampato per la prima volta nel 1759, contemporaneamente a 'Candide'. Come 'Candide', l'opera risulta una sorta di racconto filosofico volto a satireggiare il facile ottimismo del secolo dei Lumi. Il romanzo ebbe notorietà in Italia anche per la traduzione che ne fece Giuseppe Baretti. 'Hawkins and Boswell agree that Rasselas was written to help the dying Sarah Johnson and eventually to pay for her funeral. Johnson told Reynolds he wrote the work in the evenings of a single week, which implies a commencement at least on Monday 15 January, the date on which he learned of his mother's illness and on which he first sent her money' (Fleeman).
