Description

Folio (280 x 170 mm), [10], 253, [5], 326pp., bound without first and final blanks, title slightly cut-down and mounted, two additional fine engraved portraits of the author, some light fraying to blank margins of contents leaf, occasional spotting but generally very clean, marbled endpapers, nineteenth-century hard grain indigo morocco, spine with six raised bands, second compartment with contrasting morocco title label, others heavily tooled in gilt, boards with a triple fillet border, edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, minor rubbing, a very nice copy. Very few copies are found with the slightly later portrait of the poet, said to be by Marshall, which was ìapparently not prepared when this book first came from the press for it does not occur in the large-paper dedication copy. This engraving is believed to have been made from an oil painting now in Macfarlane Museum, Bridge of Allen, and to have been the property of the Earl who presented impressions to his friends.îóPforzheimer. Our copy has the later issue of the Marshall portrait which was published by William Richardson in 1795, as well as a further portrait of the poet published by J. Scott in 1806. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of John Whitefoord Mackenzie (1794-1884). Pforzheimer, 5.
