Description

Washington, DC, The Smithsonian Institution, 1907. 8vo. 240 pp., 26 plates. Original printed wrappers. = William Stimpson was the zoologist on board this expedition and nearly one thousand species of crustaceans were collected. He produced a number of preliminary reports, with, often, short descriptions and without figures. In 1871, the great Chicago fire destroyed the collection and Stimpson's notes and manuscripts, as stated by Simpson shortly before his death, the next year. However, soon after, the manuscript was rediscovered at the Navy Department, sent to the Smithsonian Institution, and, 35 years later, published without alterations except for the addition of references to the preliminary descriptions and, in the footnotes, the then current names of each taxon. One of the more rare Smithsonian publication. Wrapper edges a bit frayed and xhipped, small stamp of the Crustacea specialist Jacques Forest on the top margin of the front wrapper and front free endpaper, otherwise a very good clean copy.
