Description

LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of 950 hand-numbered copies, being number 588. A copy with the fine provenance of George C. Shattuck, the important Boston physician and educator and member of the esteemed Lee-Peabody-Shattuck family of Boston. With over sixty illustrations from photographs, drawings and sketches, decorated titlepage printed in black and red. Large 8vo, in the original green cloth backed in rubberized black cloth, the upper cover lettered and decorated in gilt, the lettering on the spine, as is normal for this title, has darkened to near invisibility due to the chemical composition of the rubberized black cloth. xxiv, 200 pp. A very nice copy, solid and clean, internally fine and fresh and with little evidence of use or age, the green cloth only lightly mellowed, and with a few marks on the rear cover, the front gilt bright but for near the edge of the backing strip as it too is affected, as is usual, by the chemical composition of the spine material.

Edizione: a classic derrydale sporting book and an impressively written work on horsemanship. the author was a lieutenant-colonel of the u.s. army cavalry and riding and schooling horses remains one of the best volumes on the subject to date. he also authored a followup title, training hunters jumpers and hacks, which was also published by the derrydale press.
