Description

Two works in one volume, folio (261x185 mm). Statuti: [6], 130 pp. and [2] engraved plates. Bolle: [8], 195, [1] pp. and [2] engraved plates. Both title pages are printed within a triple typographic frame and have a large engraved vignette in the center depicting the Pietà. The two full-page engravings (repeated also in the second work) show respectively the arms of Pope Alexander VII with the mitre and the keys above the coat-of-arms of two cardinals and the city of Rome, and the Virgin and Child on a pedestal, accompanied by a putto bearing a portrait of Pope Clement XI, with St Peter's portico in the background. The second engravings is signed by Arnold van Westerhout. Woodcut arms of Pope Clemens X on p. 189. Woodcut decorative initials, head- and tail-pieces. Contemporay mottled calf, gilt spine with five raised bands and morocco lettering piece, sprinckled edges (slightly worn and rubbed). A very good, clean copy.
Pope Paul III erected the sacred Mount of Piety of Rome in 1539 with the bull Ad sacram beati Petri sedem. In 1561 Pius IV confirmed its privileges. The statutes, promulgated in 1581 (cf. A.F. Arcelli, Gli statuti del 1581 del Sacro monte di pietà di Roma, Soveria Mannelli, 1999), were first published in Rome in 1617 and then reprinted in 1658, 1714 and 1767. The bulls and privileges updating the statutes were first printed in 1618 and then again in 1658, 1714 and c. 1750. Some of the bulls are dedicated to Jewish bankers.
